A Wednesday Farmers Market Increases Access

Now 8,998 residents living in and around Edenton have another weekly option to purchase fresh, affordable, organic and conventional fruits and vegetables, in addition to other local food.

The new setting is also more accessible to many low-income residents than the Saturday Edenton Farmers Market or the grocery store. All these factors combined mean the Edenton Wednesday Farmers Market is improving healthy food access and creating another outlet for farmers to sell their goods, helping to support the local economy and the town.

Local Government Smoke-Free Success Story

TRU Students and Tyrrell Hall

TRU Students and Tyrrell Hall
One thing was for sure, smoking near children would not be tolerated. But the people who took up this issue in Tyrrell County were not the parents of the children concerned, but rather a group of motivated students from Columbia High School, in Columbia, NC. The issue in question was a glaring exception in the County's Smoke-Free buildings policy - Tyrrell Hall. This building is used for community events as well as having fields where children's soccer games are played. But before June 2014, the County policy allowed smoking inside of Tyrrell Hall.

Students of Tyrrell County began to get involved in tobacco issues in 2012, when two students from Columbia High School participated in a Youth Empowered Solutions (YES!) Training and then started a Tobacco. Reality. Unfiltered. (TRU) club at their school. The students have done butt clean-ups of local parks, educational lunch & learns at the middle school, and puppet plays for the elementary school.
